Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
