Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
